Writings from a Woman

Recent facebook post: Its hard to be a woman.  You must think like a man, act like a lady, look like a model, and work like a horse.

You must think like a man:

Women in this day and age are afforded more gender equality than ever before in history, especially in developed nations such as Norway.  Yet along with increased opportunities come increasing pressures to excel in business, academia and personal relationships, and unless they think like a man, women are often discounted as being overly emotional and analytical.  Sorry guys, its our wiring. We try our best but its hard to slow our brains down to the rate of 2 conscious thoughts per minute.

Act like a lady:

You might be expected to think like a man, but you certainly shouldn’t expect to be able to act like one. As a woman, being assertive is often mislabeled as being aggressive, being horny is decidedly whore-ish, and of course, every woman’s favorite: feeling frustrated, tired, irritated, or annoyed is automatically bitchy.

Look like a model:

Preferably a lingerie model.  Preferably with a facebook account displaying sexy photos that border on porn.  I can say is that if men were held to such standards of appearance life would be a lot more interesting for the ladies.

And work like a horse:

But don’t expect to get much credit for it.  Professionally, women earn less than men in 99% of all occupations.  Even with the added responsibilities that come from being ‘gender equal’, women do the majority of housework and child raising, often when working just as much as their male counterparts.  However, these added duties are not often recognized by men as being worthy of any real praise, although being a single father is one of the most noble professions a man can have.

Hey, its not all bad.  We get to wear way cooler shoes.  And the fact that we’re responsible for the continuance of life on earth is pretty cool.  Even considering these benefits, International Women’s Day is a great opportunity for men around the world to recognize the ladies in their lives.  Maybe with a nice bottle of wine and a sparkling clean house.
