Having Tromsø without the sea would be like visiting the Czech Republic without drinking beer – unimaginable! You can hop on a boat and go fishing, dive into the underwater world or go on a trip with kayak! TSI can offer you at least the last option, together with lots of fun and making new friends for sure!
The structure of TSI Trulle
TSI Trulle (Tromsøstudentenes havpadleklubb, or if you prefer, The Tromsø Student’s Sea Kayaking Club) was established in the early 80’s. Currently it has about 37 members; 5 members are involved in the Trulle board (´styre´). Each board member has their area of responsibility within the club – the economy, taking care of the courses and activities, equipment and other things. „We usually meet once every second month and for ´dugnad´ if it is necessary to repair some of the boats or clean the boat house” – informs Viberg, „Members usually never repair the boats, they just tell us if there is something wrong.“ Viberg is responsible for the whole club, but the council itself does not have a strict structure; each person has an equal vote if something has to be decided.
Free Wednesday paddling
You do not have to be a member of the club to be able to join the Wednesday paddling, however, membership comes with many benefits. Usually by the end of April every year TSI Trulle is offering, together with Alfa-Fritid sea kayaking club, a beginners course, which is a little bit cheaper for the members of the club. You can get a ´våtkort´ after completing the course, which allows you to get the key for the boathouse and go kayaking any day you want to! Alternatively, if you already have the necessary knowledge, you can just pass a key test.
The club provides you with all the necessary equipment for the Wednesday paddling – safety equipment, bags, a paddle, a pump etc. And you can even ask for a wet or dry suit. Everything is free!
„We always want more people to join, because more people mean more fun!“ – says the TSI Trulle leader Marianne Madsen Viberg.
When can students join?
„Students can join the club anytime throughout the year. We also take boats on the student trip ´Frisk Luft´, taking place annually at Brensholmen late August for all students interested in outdoor sports, so everyone going there can join us for a trip!“ – suggests Viberg as opportunities for the new students. There is also the possibility for a longer trip, such as one day or the whole weekend. „People should just contact us if they have suggestions about where to go. We can organize it together, we have resources for that“ – says Viberg.
